Alex Dragomir, a popular YouTuber who shared his love of football and his medical journey with tens of thousands of followers, passed away this week after undergoing a grueling operation, his family said.

“My heart is weak. This, unfortunately, can’t get any better,” Dragomir said in a recent video to his channel. “There’s always hope, but it can’t get any better. I’m basically waiting for a heart transplant. … They’re waiting for a donor to give me a new heart, and we go from there.”
Dragomir said his condition had long been manageable with occasional appointments and checkups at home, but things got worse when his body started to swell. He eventually had trouble breathing, and doctors told him he needed an urgent heart transplant.
“I’m so sorry, my sanity is gone,” Dragomir said in his video.

In a tweet on Thursday, Dragomir said he went through a procedure to save his life later that day. He thanked his supporters for their support throughout his journey in case the operation didn’t go as planned.
“Going through a life-saving procedure if it doesn’t work, then it was a great time for people to thank you for everything you’ve done for me,” she wrote on Twitter, “but we’re praying and praying to see this. On Thursday, Dragomir’s sister posted a message on her Twitter account that she died during the operation.

Many of Dragomir’s supporters posted raves on social media following his death, including football star Marcus Rashford, who played a striker for Manchester United. Dragomir was reading a copy of Rashford’s You Are the Champion earlier this month.
“Man,” Rashford wrote of Dragomir. “I hope this book finally gave you some joy at the end. What an absolute superstar, he fought to the end. I’ve always been grateful for your support.”

Alex’s school also confirmed his death in a tribute letter.
