An ardent basketball player, Lafferty was part of the New Orleans basketball team at the 2008 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game alongside Ne-Yo, Terrell Owens, Seth Gilliam, and Master P. The team defeated the Hornets 51–50. He is a supporting partner of the Wilmington Sea Dawgs. From 2003 to 2008, Lafferty hosted an annual charity basketball event in Wilmington. In 2009, he announced that he was canceling the event, stating: “As a result of constant harassment and gross invasions of privacy via email and telephone, targeting myself, my friends and even my family, I no longer feel comfortable holding a fundraiser in such an intimate setting with fans.”
Lafferty previously dated his One Tree Hill co-star Sophia Bush from 2008 to 2009.
He became engaged to Australian actress, Alexandra Park on September 7, 2020. The couple began dating in 2016 after meeting on the set of The Royals, when Lafferty directed several episodes.
